In Dolle Dansjes the Beweegvloer changes into a real dance floor where we challenge toddlers to compose their own music. Behind every button is a unique sound loop: from instrumental loops to dance beats. The players can activate different buttons by stepping on them. Together the children compose their own song. It is up to the children to experiment with different sounds to discover which tones go well together and which do not.

Their movements and dazzling dance moves continuously create new layers of music that together form music and provide a beautiful light show on the floor. This way every time they play the song will be different!

Dolle Dansjes has been developed to stimulate the creative expression of toddlers. Turn on some swinging music and most toddlers will automatically dance along. Not inhibited by any form of embarrassment, they are dancing with each other in no time. In Dolle Dansjes toddlers express themselves through dance and movement which results in colorful visualizations and various added layers of sound to enhance and expand the basic music loop. By rewarding their movements with visual and auditory feedback, the toddlers are motivated to keep moving and experimenting. Move, play, dance, collaborate and make music in Dolle Dansjes!

Development areas

This game focuses on the following development areas:

  • Creative expression: Toddlers are given all the freedom to make their own music. Creativity, experimentation, sense of rhythm and self-expression are stimulated. The game mainly focuses on this development area.
  • Physical movement: The body as a musical instrument. Motor development and moving to the beat of the music are central.
  • Social and emotional: Together you can the most beautiful music in Dolle Dansjes! As a group, the toddlers look for the nicest and most beautiful combinations of sound effects.

My role

My responsibility was to develop the concept, test out prototypes with the target group and create a fun game which stimulated creativity. Therefore I set myself the challenge to come up with a creative expression game for this target group. Not an easy feat! In the end I went through multiple variations of prototypes, finally ending up with a prototype very close to how the game ended up being built. A big, colorful, eclectic dance floor with lots of moving and bouncing elements and visual spectacle, allowing the players to investigate, discover and experiment.
